Ly Son is an island special zone of Quang Ngai Province, located about 15 nautical miles off the mainland. Its landscape combines volcanic terrain, coastal cliffs, cultivated fields and communities whose lives have long been closely connected with the sea.

A trip to Ly Son is about more than beaches. Hang Cau, To Vo Gate and Thoi Loi reveal the island’s volcanic geology, while local heritage sites and ceremonies linked to the historic Hoang Sa Flotilla add an important cultural and historical dimension to the journey.

Planning the Trip

How to Get to Ly Son

The most common route is to travel to Sa Ky Port on the Quang Ngai mainland and take a passenger boat to Ly Son. This sea route is the main gateway used by most visitors heading to the larger island.

Departure times, the number of daily sailings and ticket prices can change depending on the operator, travel season and sea conditions. During rough weather, services may be adjusted or temporarily suspended for safety.

Sa Ky → Ly Son
Check the latest sailing schedule and service status before departure, especially on weekends and public holidays.
Tickets & Schedules
Do not rely on old ticket prices from travel blogs. Check the current fare and published departure time when booking.
Big Island → Little Island
Transfers to Little Island depend on local boat schedules and sea conditions. Confirm availability locally on the day of your trip.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Ly Son?
Ly Son’s dry season generally runs from around March to August. This period is often more convenient for outdoor activities, but sea conditions can still change quickly. Before travelling, check the latest wind, wave and boat information rather than relying only on the month of the year.

Landscapes

Places to Visit on Ly Son

Many of Ly Son’s best-known sights are relatively close together on Big Island, but each reveals a different aspect of the island’s volcanic terrain and coastal environment.

Hang Cau beneath Thoi Loi Mountain on Ly Son Island

01 · Hang Cau
Volcanic Cliffs Beneath Thoi Loi
Hang Cau lies at the foot of Thoi Loi, where volcanic rock meets the sea. The exposed cliff layers and long-term action of waves create a coastal setting that feels very different from a conventional sandy beach.

02 · To Vo Gate
A Natural Basalt Arch by the Sea
To Vo Gate is part of the volcanic landscape associated with the Gieng Tien volcanic system. Over time, basalt layers were shaped by marine erosion into the natural arch seen today.

03 · Thoi Loi
A Higher View of Ly Son
Thoi Loi is one of the island’s highest points, rising to about 169 metres above sea level. From the surrounding area, visitors can look across the island’s agricultural land and coastal terrain.
04 · Little Island
A Quieter Side of Ly Son
Little Island, also known as An Binh, offers a smaller and quieter setting than Big Island. Swimming and other sea activities should always depend on current weather, sea conditions and local guidance.

Culture & History

Ly Son and the Legacy of the Hoang Sa Flotilla

Ly Son has deep historical ties to the Hoang Sa Flotilla and the Bac Hai flotilla under its administration. This history helps explain why many village communal houses, heritage sites, rituals and memorial spaces on the island carry significance beyond ordinary sightseeing.

Local Food

What to Eat on Ly Son

Food on Ly Son reflects the island’s seafood, garlic and shallot-growing traditions, along with the straightforward flavors of central Vietnamese home cooking. Rather than trying to follow a long checklist, it is often better to ask what ingredients are fresh and available that day.

A local way of enjoying an ingredient closely associated with Ly Son’s garlic-growing landscape. Recipes and preparation styles can vary.
Seafood
Ask about the price and cooking method before ordering, especially for seafood sold by weight or according to the day’s market price.

What to Know Before Your Trip

01
Check the Boat Before Leaving
Boat schedules can change because of wind, waves or operational conditions. Do not assume a departure will follow a timetable saved several days earlier.
02
Prepare for Sun and Wind
Bring drinking water, sun protection, a hat and suitable footwear when spending long periods outdoors or walking across rocky areas.
03
Respect the Marine Environment
Avoid stepping on coral, removing marine life or collecting rocks as souvenirs. Reduce single-use plastic when practical.
04
Respect Farms and Local Spaces
If you want to take photos inside garlic or shallot fields, or in spaces used by local residents, ask permission before entering.

Information to Recheck Before Travelling
